Fire pit gravel calculator

Measure the open inside diameter of the pit, then the gravel band around it (often about 2 ft). Depth 3–4″ on fabric is typical. Type your size above — the result updates as you go.

Lava is lighter, so you order fewer tons for the same ring, and it is commonly sold for fire features — still confirm it is heat-rated. Pea is cheaper and heavier. Default here is lava. Do not use river cobbles that can spall in heat unless the maker says so.

Yes under the ring: it stops mud mixing into the stone. It is not a fire barrier. Keep stone out of the bowl unless the pit is designed for it.

Check city, HOA, and open-flame rules before you burn. A gravel ring is not a spark arrestor and does not replace a setback from the house, fence, or trees. This page is not a fire marshal.

The default lava ring is about a third of a ton — under the half-ton line, so bags are the usual buy. A wide patio ring can cross into bulk; then a landscape-yard dump is usually cheaper.
