Gravel ring for a fire pit

A ring of stone around the pit keeps mud and grass off the fire and gives a place to stand. It is not a spark arrestor and it does not replace a legal setback from fences, trees, or the house.

Material

Pea gravel is common and cheap. Lava rock is lighter per yard (you order fewer tons for the same volume) and is sold for fire features — still confirm it is rated for your pit. Do not use river cobbles that can spall in heat unless the maker says so.

Size

Measure the open inside diameter of the pit, then the width of the gravel band you want (often about 2 ft). Depth 3–4″ is typical on a weed barrier.

Can I skip the permit question?

No. HOA and city rules vary. This page is not a fire marshal.

Bags or bulk?

A small ring is often bags. A wide patio ring is bulk.
